Arts Management

Mission, Vision, and Values

My mission in life is to utilize my career in arts, entertainment, and outdoor recreation to bring opportunities to others. This could be through donating money and resources, destigmatization, or employment, for example. This mission closely ties together with my vision for my career and future as an artist, employee, and person; as well as with my values which relate directly to the way I navigate my life and career goals.

When I envision my future, I see myself making most of my money through a career in Special Events Management in an outdoor recreation related business like a ski resort. It is a known fact that outdoor recreation tends to lack diversity and inclusion, and ski towns specifically are known for having high rates of mental health issues like anxiety and depression. I believe that, with a career in Special Events Management, I could utilize resources and opportunities to help those who may experience discrimination or hardship. For example, according to Emma Gosalvez in their article, Nature Gap: Why Outdoor Spaces Lack Diversity and Inclusion, “People of color have experienced segregation from a multitude of outdoor recreation agencies including the Civilian Conservation Corps and National Parks System.” To be specific, the creators of these agencies, both being white men, outwardly spoke about their disapproval of anyone who is not of White-European descent coming to the public parks and National Parks in the United States. This still impacts people today, as outdoor recreation still primarily is only enjoyed by White people. With this, people of color, and, specifically, Black people, often face violence and discrimination in public spaces. A very well-known example being Ahmaud Arbery who was shot and killed while out on a jog. I think that, with a career in Events Management, it is possible to generate opportunities through special events and festivals that are safe spaces for those who may face prejudice or violence in these types of settings. This is merely one example of how I envision utilizing a career in special events as a way of creating opportunities and generating resources for specific causes. Other examples of causes I would like to use my career to generate money, resources, and opportunities for are environmental justice, bettering mental health in ski towns, and supplying opportunities to children with low-income families.

In addition to a career in Special Events Management, I see myself with a “side hustle” of creating art and donating proceeds to causes through art sales. Specifically, I imagine having a developed and cohesive body of work that can be sold as original artwork, art prints, or on merchandise like stickers, t-shirts, magnets, and the like. I do not imagine myself making a lot of money off this work for my own personal usage. I see most of the money made from this work being donated to causes like the ones mentioned above, and the remaining money being used to pay for materials and shipping. It is important to me that art remains a passion of mine, and something I utilize to drive other passions, rather than becoming a primary source for my own income.

My mission for my life and career and my vision for my future relate very closely to my values in my life. I previously mentioned a few causes that are important to me like environmental justice, mental health, and equality. With that, my top two values are human rights and environmental rights. That said, some of my other values are independence, honesty, motivation, and creativity. I am a very motivated person who aims to be as multi-faceted and hard-working as possible, and these values guide my life in and out of the workplace, as I work toward achieving my goals.
